Highlights from the students' cruise experience

The hands-on experience and opportunity to get involved taught me so much and was so rewarding. I was able to apply concepts and techniques I am studying in my undergraduate degree and see how they work as part of a real research project.

I gained hands-on laboratory experience filtering samples for suspended particulate matter, lipids and chlorophyll, as well as valuable experience collecting and processing observational data at sea. Spending time at sea gave me a much better understanding of the practical challenges involved in oceanographic research and has been extremely useful in developing my confidence and practical skills as an early-career oceanographer.

Beyond the technical side, I found the most rewarding part was seeing how large-scale, real-world research operates, with scientists from multiple, institutions including Cefas, The National Oceanography Centre, PML, Imperial College London, ¾«¶«´«Ã½, Leeds and Heriot-Watt Universities working as a team toward shared goals.
