I work on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and how it can inform public health decision-making. Wastewater offers an unbiased, population-level view of infection and antimicrobial resistance in a community, but its value depends on whether the data are robust, timely, and interpretable enough for public health agencies to act on. My research sits at that interface of method  development, quality assurance and data analysis that turn wastewater signals into evidence for decisions.

I am Technical and Scientific Lead of the Welsh National Wastewater Monitoring Programme, which monitors viral pathogens including SARS-CoV-2, norovirus and poliovirus in partnership with Verily, Public Health Wales, and the Welsh Government. My work spans molecular and genomic surveillance (qPCR and metagenomics), antimicrobial resistance monitoring, and the development of computational approaches for early warning of emerging threats. I also lead the programme’s ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation process (assessment scheduled for early 2027), because data that inform public health decisions need to meet the same standards as clinical testing.
